October in the garden

October garden jobs in Bromley.

October is the month to get ahead. The soil is still warm, the rain is back and the leaves are coming down. Here is what our gardeners are doing in Bromley gardens right now.

01

Clear the leaves, but do not bin them

Fallen leaves smother the lawn and encourage disease, so rake or blow them off the grass every week or two. Do not waste them. Stack them in a wire bin or a spare corner and in a year or so you have free leaf mould, which is brilliant for improving soil.

02

Repair and overseed the lawn

October is one of the best months to fix a tired lawn. The soil is still warm and the autumn rain does the watering for you. Scarify out the thatch and moss, spike compacted patches, then overseed bare areas and top-dress with a thin layer of soil or lawn feed. Keep off it while the seed beds in.

03

Plant bulbs and bare-root hedging

Daffodils and crocus go in now. Tulips are best left until November, which helps avoid tulip fire. From late October, bare-root hedging and trees become available and are cheaper than potted plants. Plant them while they are dormant and water them in well.

04

Cut back and tidy the borders

Once perennials have collapsed and turned brown, cut them back to a few centimetres and remove the old growth. Leave some seed heads and a few hollow stems for wildlife. Add a layer of compost or bark mulch to feed the soil and keep weeds down over winter.

05

Trim hedges and prune what needs it

A final trim of hedges now keeps them neat through winter. Check for late nests first. Prune out dead, diseased or crossing branches on shrubs, and leave the main pruning of most trees and roses until they are fully dormant.

06

Get the garden ready for frost

Bring tender plants and pots under cover, wrap or move pots away from walls that hold frost, drain outdoor taps and hoses, and clean gutters and drains before the heavy leaf fall. A tidy shed and sharpened tools now will save you time in spring.
